Gilding discolours over time, and frames can suffer knocks and lose pieces, in which case restoration is necessary. Restoration work can vary from as little as repairing small chips in the gesso of a mirror frame, to fully stripping a piece of any layers of paint, varnish or even bad restoration done in the past, to find the original surface. Then once all repairs are done the piece can be patched or re-gilded and aged.
